Game Boy comes home

March 29th, 2003

I love my Game Boy Advance, I’ve owned one since they were released a few years back. Heck, I’ve even owned the regular Game Boy and Game Boy Color. But one of my favorite devices I used with the older Game Boys was the “Super Game Boy”:http://www.gamersgraveyard.com/repository/snes/peripherals/supergameboy.html for Super Nintendo.

Once the Nintendo 64 was released, many people hoped for an N64 version of the Super Game Boy. It never came even though Nintendo released a Game Boy Transfer Pak which allowed selected Game Boy Color games to transfer data with their Nintendo 64 counterpart. The Pokemon Stadium games on N64 allowed you to play only the Pokemon Game Boy games through the transfer pack, of course limiting the transfer paks power.

Since the release of the Gamecube I’ve been hoping for something that would allow all Game Boy games to be played on the console, including the newer Game Boy Advance games. When I heard last December that this was going to be a reality soon, I couldn’t believe it. Finally Nintendo had listened to their fans and was planning the best Game Boy Player device ever.

The Game Boy Players was released in Japan last week and I imported one because I have a Spice colored ‘cube and wanted them to match… uh, no, I just wanted one early. (Do not import a Game Boy Player unless you have the Freeloader Device or a modified Gamecube. The Game Boy Player requires the use of a Japanese Boot Disc to function. The boot disc will *NOT* work on an American Gamecube. You’ve been warned.)

The Game Boy Player is just amazing, playing all previous Game Boy games in full color on the t.v. Being able to play the games with a wireless Wavebird controller is even better! I really think Nintendo has out done themselves this time and I hope that the release of this great device will help boost Gamecube sales. You don’t even need to own a Game Boy Advance in order to enjoy the device, you just need to buy some Game Boy Advance games. There are hundreds of quality Game Boy Advance titles that should not be missed. If you do own a Game Boy Advance, you can also link up the GBA to the Game Boy Player and play multiplayer games! Awesome!

I’ve linked to some in depth previews which also include massive amounts of media, both photos and movies of the device.

If you don’t have the means to play the Japanese Game Boy Player, by all means, be sure to get one when they’re released on our shores in June.
