Hmm… I Think…
June 4th, 2003
… therefore I am human. I was about to post a long comment about the future of IT jobs in America since I read an “article”:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2003/06/02/BU270141.DTL the other day related to such a topic.
I realized while writing the post I was very upset about the subject and began writing things in my “angry” tone instead of my “rational” tone. Consider this post my first attempt at censorship against myself. It doesn’t feel very good to censor one’s self, but sometimes “it needs to happen”:http://www.snapturtle.com/archives/000273.php.
Please, read the “article”:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2003/06/02/BU270141.DTL and make your own judgments, I’ve left my in the vault for now.

The deal with this is that there’s no getting around it. Instead of us getting all territorial about it, it would be smarter to evolve with the market trend.

Man, I could really rip right into your comments Naaman but of course, I shall not.
I do ask you this: How are we suppose to evolve with the trend if the jobs are just disappearing? I suppose your reply would be “Just learn a new industry”. My reply is, I’ve served coffee before and I’d really rather not work at Starbucks if I don’t have to.

Actually, my reply is more along the lines of, manage the teams working overseas. Develop a niche spot in the world of development — i.e. specialize. Honestly, put yourself in the organization’s shoes — how can you justify spending twice as much on a service of the same quality? So, play their game. Give them something they can’t get overseas.

I’d really like to see the ACTUAL cost savings on paper. I’m sick and tired of hearing it in passing but until I actually see it, I’m not a believer due to my own experiences of being taken for a ride from offshore vendors.
