Anyone Buying Technology Books?

I use to buy a ton of technology books a few years ago. I stopped buying them back in 2002 when I realized that everything I needed to know could be easily found online through Google or archived mailing lists. I still buy books on rare occassions and I’m actually looking forward to “Aaron Hillegass’s”:http://www.bignerdranch.com/ Panther programming book.

Seems to me that O’Reilly, the famous tech book publisher, is “learning this the hard way”:http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2003/10/29/deviant.htm as I’m not the only one who’s stopped or cut down on the book buying.

What did they expect really? Excerpts of “how to” programing but the real down and dirty stuff was to be found only in the animal flavor of the month book? Hardly. The internet has changed book writing and publishing forever, hurting the technology book sector the hardest due the availability of programing knowledge online. O’Reilly needs to adapt, more than likely through paid services, but they won’t be the only ones.

  1. i bought the o’reilly asp in nutshell once: i knew less after reading it. I agree you can use the net to get your information. but some times those missing manuals just are so darn handy.
