My wife and daughter have been selling girl scout cookies for the last month and half now attempting to raise money for their troop activities. Apparently some “girl scouting moms in Texas”:http://www.kottke.org/04/03/those-naughty-girl-scouts aren’t so sure what they’re raising money for so they’ve boycotted the cookies and quit their troop.
Basically this all comes down to what they consider “morally right” and that these moms feel that the Girl Scouts of America support such things as sex education and Planned Parenthood.
Even if GSoA did in fact endorse such things (“which they don’t according to the article”:http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2004-03-03-cookie-boycott_x.htm) as sex ed and Planned Parenthood, what in the hell is wrong with that? My daugther hears about this stuff at school at age 7, should I ban her from the playground?
Over the years it’s been increasingly more difficult to shelter her from these things and I feel that the more I try, the less likely she’ll either 1) believe me when I tell her the truth and/or 2) refrain from asking me serious questions thinking I won’t give her honest responses.
A word of advice to those moms in Texas; be honest with your kids and stop sheltering them from the real world or they’ll make you pay later on in life by ignoring your existance.
Hey, I never said it was easy… now I just need to practice what I preach.
