My Sony PSP

Ugh… I told myself many times over the last several months that a PSP was not in my future. Whenever I came across a newsbit about the PSP I’d tell myself I don’t need one or I already have enough portable gaming devices. Heck, I’d go so far as to list out all the things that are wrong with the PSP and then attempt to completely ignore all the upsides. Even with all this negative energy I was trying to con myself into believing, I broke down and bought one anyway. (/kick self)

Honestly, I’m not disappointed. Lumines is one fantastic puzzle game, very addicting and highly entertaining at the same time. I dig the fact that it can display photos, play music, and play videos; if only I could actually find a damn 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo card somewhere I’d be all set. What in the hell is going on with the shortage in that department?

WipeOut Pure has a built-in web browser and there is now a widely publicized hack to allow you to actually use it for light web browsing via WiFi.

PSPWare seems to be the best sync software for Mac right now. Not bad at converting movies to PSP format either. Been having some issues getting widescreen movies to play from ffmpegX because the default 320×240 setting is not ideal. Any tips out there?

The Logitech PlayGear Pocket is looking like a good, inexpensive, small durable case for the PSP although it hasn’t shipped yet.

So far I’m really liking what the PSP community has done with the device in only a few days. Great sync software, the browser hack, and just all the excitement for the future. Hopefully we’ll start seeing some homebrew apps soon as well.

  1. Wait could I play you while you are there and I am here? That would be cool. Must….resist….urge…to purchase. I just got back from target where they had like fifteen of them. Availability is not a problem.

Online multiplayer is supported in some games currently; NHL, World Tour Soccer, Twisted Metal, the upcoming MLB, and probably some others I forget.

The only real caught with the multiplayer is that you have to have a wireless network setup at your house or use someone elses to play on. The PSP only supports WiFi, not direct connect networking.

Embrace the urge, it’s only money and you can’t take it with you ;)

  3. Try 368×208 for the hell of it.

  4. Yeah, I’ve tried 368×208. That’s the resolution that won’t work where as 320×240 does but looks awful for widescreen content for obvious reasons :)

The latest ffmpegX 0.0.9t supports the 368×208 resolution. Get it at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
