Update 2: Download the 2.0 firmware from Sony.
Update: I’m gaining a lot of traffic to this article. I’m assuming you’re coming here for the PSP 2.0 Update file. Find it here.
The PSP 2.0 firmware was released on July 26th much to my anticipation. After reading reports about the new features, I had no choice but to download it and install right away. Of course, I figured Sony wouldn’t be to thrilled with me installing the firmware on my US PSP. Turns out, they’re now recommending NOT to install it unless you have a Japanese PSP. Great. Too late.
In a nutshell the new features include:
- A web browser.
- Support for wallpaper.
- WPA-PSK added for wireless security.
- AVC codec support.
There are a bunch of other little changes that were included as well, IGN has the full list.
I’ve been playing with the browser quite a bit and I’m impressed. Sure beats surfing from my cell phone which I actually do quite a bit. The only downside with the PSP is it lacks Bluetooth. If the PSP had Bluetooth I could surf the web on the PSP via my cell phone and have a really nice display wherever I go.
The wallpaper feature is also nifty. I was getting a bit tired of the rotating colored backgrounds, one for each month. Currently I’m running a Penny Arcade PSP specific wallpaper. Not bad Tycho. For more PSP wallpapers check out InterfaceLIFT.
Meh, but now with Sony stating not to install the firmware I hope I can install the US version when it’s released. Otherwise, I may have a $250 paper weight in the future. So, if you are contemplating installing the firmware, heed my advice, DON’T DO IT.

You could say that
I have the 2.0 version installed and have been running it for about 2 weeks now, non-stop and still have had no problems. and if you want to install the american version, all you will have to do is name it version 2.01 and the PSP will accept it. I see no current problem it, and love the 2.0 update.
hey everybody listen up i just got off the phone with sony i first called and talked with a guy and i asked him when the u.s. 2.0 psp update was comming out he said he didnt know except that it was comming out some time this week and that it was supposed to come out the 12th but they are adding new things to the update and making sure there are no bugs and stuff then i asked him if it was garanteed to come out this week and he said no even though they said it would come out this week so dont counton it comming out this week i mean it still could but dont assume that its is and i then asked him if i can put the japan 2.0 psp update on my u.s. psp and then when the u.s. 2.0 update comes out if i can install it over the japan 2.0 psp so it is just the u.s. 2.0 update and he said no cause it is the same update but when the u.s. comes out with a newer update after the 2.0 the you will be able to do that and he said if you put the japan 2.0 update on your u.s. psp it might be in a different word format like japanees and that you can put on the u.s. psp but will it harm you psp it could but probably wont and he never said anything about that it will void your warrentee cause there is know why of knowing that you put the japan 2.0 on your u.s. psp cause like he said when they come out with a newer u.s. psp update after 2.0 you can install it over the japan 2.0 update and wont show that you put the japan 2.0 update on your u.s. psp then i called back again and a lady answered and i saked the same question i asked the guy which was when the u.s. 2.0 psp update was going to come out and she said sometime this week and then i aksed her if it was garenteed to come out this week and she said that if they said it was going to come out this week then it will so they both said something different so dont plan on the update comming out this week but that it still could but just dont get your hopes up.
