An Acquired Taste

Taste. It’s what makes the world go round. We all have our own favorite flavors. Some people enjoy blue while others may prefer orange (me). An interesting quote from the Cranky Gamers made me think that Animal Crossing may perhaps share some negative aspects of gameplay that one might find in your average MMOG.

“Animal Crossing is a philosophy. It’s preaching that life is nothing but a bunch of work for pointless trinkets, just so you can survive and interact with other people, all of whom are frauds anyway who don’t give a damn about what you say. And it doesn’t end until you decide to stop playing.”

However, I’d prefer the quote read like this…

World of Warcraft is a philosophy. It’s preaching that life is nothing but a bunch of work for pointless trinkets, just so you can survive and interact with other people, all of whom are frauds anyway who don’t give a damn about what you say. And it doesn’t end until you decide to stop playing.”

The difference here is that Animal Crossing is self contained, can easily be played in short 15 minute bursts and does not require you to talk to anyone, NPC or otherwise. You’re also not required to collect, fish, dig, plant, shake, write, walk, donate, net, design, payoff, or play in Animal Crossing.

You can read the rest of this guys rant over at Hardcore Gaming 101… I honestly think he misses the point of the Animal Crossing “philosophy” but again, it’s an acquired taste.

Speaking of which; I have PSP Me & My Katamari and PSP Densha De Go! Pocket on the way from Japan. Perhaps he finds those games pointless too?

I agree with him. Whenever someone asks on a forum or something what game they should get for their Nintendo DS, everyone posts “Animal Crossing” — which I think is the worst game you could ever suggest to someone because it’s not a game everyone likes. It’s a game people think they’ll like, but when they actually get around to playing it they wind up bored as hell — much like me. Animal Crossing is like a chore to play, there’s no real goal. You’re striving for nothing, ultimately. I find MMOs to be just as boring and tedious. It’s either something you like, or your hate. Much like a lot of things.

One of the most boring “niche” games I’ve ever played. Honestly, Harvest Moon did the “niche” thing better for a while. Also, I greatly disliked the Katamari Damacy games. Can’t speak for the owner of that site, though.

Just thought I’d mention this: your post makes you look like a fanboy — all riled up because someone expressed a distaste for one of your apparent obessions. Acting this way doesn’t really result in people taking your opinions seriously, either.

  2. Oh no… I’m a “fanboy”… riled up? I just think it’s funny that the reasoning for which he dislikes one game can actually be applied to ANY game.

Perhaps you need to re-read my post again. I said it was an acquired taste hence the title of the post…

And as far as “obsession” (you may want to look up the spelling next time you use a big word) goes… I play for no more than 30 minutes at a time and usually only every couple of days. It does get boring if you attempt to play Animal Crossing in longer bursts.
