TwitterHawai’i 2007: Day Six
Exploration. Isn’t that what the worlds early “explorers” did? Today we decided to explore the Big Island, at least in the South Kohola and North Kona areas. The first beach we stopped at was Kikaua Beach. This beach has the perfect sand and the perfect water for swimming. The beach is located in a private housing development but the beach is public access. The trick is to get a public access pass from the security gate then drive down to the parking lot. From there it’s a short walk on a paved path to the beach.
We snorkeled, swam, and built sand castles all right within 5 feet of the water. Since there is no shore break due to a cove like design, you can literately pitch your beach towel right on the beach front. Everyone had a great time and we spent about 3 hours there. After eating lunch we headed off north into Waikoloa.
Waikoloa is home to the Hilton and Marriott resort hotels. There wasn’t really much to see and unfortunately I later learned that we missed the turnoff for A’Bay which apparently sees a lot of sun tanning turtles. After picking up some ice cream and a couple smoothies at the local shops we moved on down the road to yet another beach. By this time it was near 1:00pm and it was HOT, HOT, HOT. The kids were getting tired and actually feel asleep on the drive back to our hotel.
Back at the hotel, we did more swimming (big surprise), ate dinner at the Crystal Blue (another surprise), watched the sunset, and saw Mommy and Autumn’s manta ray boat. Since they both didn’t see manta rays on last nights trip they got to go again for free.
